Late summer usually isn’t the time for moviegoing audiences to find gems. Kids are getting ready to go back to school. Multiplexes are suffering from blockbuster fatigue. We’re all starting to look ahead to the Oscar season, which usually dominates the fall. 

But every once in a while, a movie comes out of nowhere at the end of the summer and surprises you… and this year, it might be Getaway. Here’s the latest trailer (via Apple), followed by three things it taught us about the breakneck thriller: 
 

 
1. Ethan Hawke is in everything at the moment. Audiences can see him in The Purge, starting Friday. Select markets can enjoy him in Before Midnight, which slowly is expanding. And then he’ll get behind the wheel for this thriller. He’s having a very busy year. 
 
2. Hollywood thinks modern audiences LOVE car-chase scenes. Call it Fast & Furious Syndrome, but everything from Transporter sequels to James Bond installments are loading up on fast-moving sports cars and the grizzled heroes who drive them. Ah yes, Drive. That’s another example of a contemporary car-based thriller. 
 
3. Selena Gomez still loves guns and violence. Yes, we saw her shed her Disney Channel roots earlier this year with Spring Breakers. Now Getaway looks like another deliberate step in the maturation process of Ms. Gomez, and I think that’s only going to help her expand her already sizable fan base. Oh, and she can jump out of a rapidly moving vehicle without scratching her beautiful face. Impressive.
 
In addition to the trailer, Warner Bros. dropped a nondescript poster for Getaway, which will be codirected by Courtney Solomon and Yaron Levy. It’s opening in theaters on August 30. What do you think of the trailer? Does it get you interested in Getaway?
