Plan 9 from Outer Space turns 50 tomorrow, and what better way to commemorate The Worst Film of All Time's golden anniversary than watching it how it was intended—on the big screen. RiffTrax will be showing a national, special encore presentation for Plan 9 (in color) on Oct. 8, constantly riffing it with their tongue-in-cheek wisecracks. It's pretty much a voiceover commentary from the guys who did Sci-Fi Channel's "Mystery Science Theater 3000."
You can't claim you're a film buff if you have no idea who director Ed Wood is. MovieLine wrote up a piece about the auteur's consistently crappy films, which eventually won him critical acclaim through Plan 9. Our own Harry Medved, who co-authored The Fifty Worst Films of All Time has gotten a lot of flak for not mentioning it, but had a reason why. "At the time, we didn't think Plan 9 was bad enough to merit inclusion, as its inspired lunacy was consistently entertaining," Medved says.
It's lived on in the "so bad it's good" genre, thanks to Medved’s follow-up book, The Golden Turkey Awards, MST and Tim Burton's biopic on Wood, starring Johnny Depp. Nice to know that Wood is still getting the cult recognition he deserves. Happy 50th, Plan 9!
ed wood would probably have loved to see his characters in color if he only had the budget - so cool that they gave PLAN 9 the colorization treatment - i wonder if the "outer space" guys are colored green?
"Welcome to the party, pal."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."
"When am I gonna learn how to punch?"
"These go to eleven."
"Benjamin, have you ever been severely beaten about the face & neck?"
"Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."
"Jessica's got cable."
