The Campaign As someone who isn't a huge fan of either Will Ferrell or Zach Galifianakis, I expected more bathroom humor and eye-rolling than knee-slapping laughs, so nobody was more surprised than I at how funny this movie is. Yeah, there's the crude comedy and dumb jokes you'd expect, but the movie perfectly plays to its stars' strengths -- Galifianakis's hapless, determined and eventually cuckolded Marty Huggins makes a perfect foil to Ferrell's smarmy Southern career politician in a congressional race that serves up low blows both literally and figuratively. Oh, and '80s-movie fans will grin at some of the lines and references, not the least of which is Dan Aykroyd machinating behind the scenes a la Trading Places. Extras: Not many. Deleted scenes (DVD/BD); the BD adds Line-O-Rama and a gag reel.
Safety Not Guaranteed Mark Duplass seems to be everywhere these days, with roles in three movies this year plus last year's well received Your Sister's Sister and 2011's Jeff Who Lives at Home, which he co-wrote with brother Jay. Here he stars as an oddball store clerk who thinks he's found a way to travel back in time; not wanting to go it alone, he puts an ad in the paper for a traveling partner, sparking the curiosity of a local reporter who brings his interns along to investigate. Indie "it girl" Aubrey Plaza stars as one of them. Extras: Making-of featurette, a look at the real-life ad that inspired the film, and a time capsule Easter egg (DVD/BD).
Ruby Sparks Paul Dano stars as a struggling novelist who isn't having much luck with either his new book or his love life -- until he comes home one day to find one of his inspirational characters alive and breathing in his living room. Extras: 3 featurettes on the story and real-life star-director couples (DVD); the BD adds featurettes on the cast and "Los Angeles: The Other Character."
Blu-ray Box Set Must-Own: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection
Fans of Hitchcock and great cinema in general, get ready for a veritable feast of film's finest on high-def with this brand-new collection of 15 of the director's films, 13 of which are finally debuting on Blu-ray. The set offers a sizable chunk of the director's best and most well known work -- Vertigo, Psycho, North by Northwest, and my personal favorite Rear Window -- as well as some lesser known films you'll want to check out if you're only familiar with the famous ones. (If you're wondering where such favorites as Dial M for Murder, Strangers on a Train and Rebecca are, it's because this set is put out by Universal and the director worked for other studios too. But, small price to pay for what you get here.) Each movie has its own sleeve within the Digi-book packaging, which slides into a hard case that also contains a collectible 58-page book of storyboards, correspondence, costume designs, photos and more. You'll also find 15 hours of extras and commentary and the new documentary "The Birds, Hitchcock's Monster Movie"--if you're looking for a way to keep occupied for hours, if not days, here's your solution.
