While NBC passed on the TV pilot for Wonder Woman starring Adrianne Palicki as the titular heroine, director Nicholas Winding Refn has reiterated that he is hoping to one say direct a Wonder Woman movie and if it ever came together, Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks would be his pick to play the role made famous by Lynda Carter. The director spoke at the Los Angeles premiere of his action thriller Drive saying that, “If I ever get to do it, she’s going to be it.”
Hendricks had expressed interest in playing the part last year, saying, “I’ve been wanting to wear that outfit my whole life. I had Wonder Woman Underoos.”
Warner Bros. has been trying to develop a Wonder Woman movie for almost seven years now. Initially the studio had teamed with Silver Pictures (producer Joel Silver’s production company) and announced that Joss Whedon would write and direct the film adaptation. After two years, Whedon had not finished a script and citing creative differences with the studio, walked away. The project remained dormant for three years, when Warner Bros. announced that a 2010 movie was in development and Refn had expressed interest in helming the project.
Warner Bros. is still developing the film which is now slated for a 2013 release. X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner is said to be campaigning to produce the movie while Batman Begins/Dark Knight Rises writer David S. Goyer is rumored to be involved as a writer.
All of these developments factor into the progress of the Justice League of America movie, essentially the DC Comics version of Marvel’s Avengers squad. With Green Lantern finally arriving, albeit to underwhelming box office receipts and the Superman reboot and final Nolan-helmed Dark Knight arriving in theaters next year, there are still a few DC characters awaiting a stand-alone movie before the heroes unite. Wonder Woman is one of those main characters, along with Flash and Aquaman.
