'Percy Jackson' Sequel Gets 'Wimpy Kid' Director

When Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief hit theaters last winter, the mythology-infused film went on to become a modest hit, drumming up $226 million worldwide. In March, we reported that Fox 2000 was prepping a sequel for a 2012 release date.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the production has now locked down both star Logan Lerman, who plays Percy, as well as director Thor Freudenthal. Freudenthal is best known for helming Diary of a Wimpy Kid and will direct the script from the writing team of Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszweski (Ed Wood, Agent Cody Banks).
With the Harry Potter franchise concluding next month, Fox is hoping to sate the appetite of audiences hungering for fantastical adventure movies with this second Percy movie. Current plans are to move quickly into production and have the movie ready as early as 2012.
The second Percy movie, The Sea of Monsters, will follow Percy and his group of friends as they head to the titular sea to find the mythical Golden Fleece as well as free a friend who has been captured. It's expected that this sequel will draw from other Percy Jackson books as well as "Sea of Monsters."
