Oscar Surprises & Snubs

Oscar Surprises & Snubs

The Academy has spoken...and apparently, they went to see a different movie than the mass of moviegoers. Replace the words The Dark Knight with The Reader in most of the major categories, and that was both THE surprise and snub of Oscar nom morning. No Best Picture, Best Director or even Best Screenplay for TDK. Yes, of course, Heath Ledger was nominated for Best Supporting Actor (and rightfully so). But as the movie re-opens in theaters this Friday, it'll do so without those pumped-up "Best Picture" ads (TDK received 8 noms, but other than Heath, they were all for technical categories...and no nom for the score. Really?). No love was shown, too, for Clint Eastwood's box office hit Gran Torino (completely shut out), Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet in Revolutionary Road, and Wall-E had to settle for Best Animated Feature instead of Best Pic. Still, there were some surprises worth cheering. You'll see a lot of polls out today gauging the worst snub (including our Awards Watch poll), but in the spirit of optimism (cha-ching, Slumdog Millionaire and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button led nominees with 10 and 13, respectively), we're asking...

Look, I am not a comic book junky, and Batman was something when I was a kid I was even passingly obsessed with, but the fact that a movie can recieve 530+ million at the box office in the US and a total 1 Billion world wide!!!, more then 200 million then the next film, be one of the highest rated films in history (if you go by IMDB or many other web sites) have the acting of Ledger, Morgan Freemen, Micheal Cain, Aaron eckhardt, Gary Oldman, and Christian Bale, AND STILL NOT GET AN ACTING NOD!? quick fact, the dark knight has made roughly 800 MILLION DOLLARS more than all of the Best Picture Nominees!!!!! I mean it made 5 times that of all the others, and mind you Benjamin Button made over a 100 million. The reader made less than 10 million and Slumdog millionaire has made only 10 milk and Frost/nixon are only around the 20 million range!! Yes, I know it is not all about money, but at some point, you have to at least throw a flippin bone!! I mean, aren't the point of movies supposed to be entertainment, so wouldn't the most entertaining movie of the past decade be at least nominated!!! this is so agrivating. I am not watching like I have not watched for years. All those people are going to do is stand up there, make their political remarks, and pat themselves on the backs for impressing only themselves!!!

Agreed, these nominations blow big chunks. Dark Knight, WallE, The Wrestler, Man on Wire, Tropic Thunder and Iron Man more deserving than Frost/Nixon. Brad Pitt doesn't hold a lick to big Clint in a street match, and Angelina Jolie over Sally Hawkins? Puhlleazzzeee.

I agree TDK was overlooked big time. Shudda taked a Best Pic nod, Best Director, etc....But from past observations, (and I don't think I'm alone here), the academy is a tough one to figure out. Where and or why do they get some of their noms. The first one that comes to mind was Denzels win over Russell Crowe. (Beautiful Mind and Training Day) Jeesh, com'on! I love Denzel ,but Russell acted his **** off !. I guess he was critical of the academy, from what I gather. And that may of hurt his chances. WTF !. Anyway, I was happy to see Mickey O'Rourke get a nod and the lady who portrayed Benjamin Buttons adopted mother, sorry, her name escapes me. But I called that one after seeing the film. She was brilliant. But I'll be watching the Oscars, never miss'em.
