BLIND MOUNTAIN
Independant Chinese filmmaker Li Yang scores again with his anti-establishment slant in this heartwrenchingly realistic film dealing with wife slavery in remote villages in Northern China. Fresh- out-of-college woman (marvelously realized by Huang Lu) is duped into thinking she will make lots of money selling herbs to locals but ends up being sold for $7000.00 to an inhumane tribe of barbaric peasants living in a remote mountainous region where she is raped and beaten into submission. Events lead to anxiety-riddeden desperation as she tries futilely to escape numerous times - even with the assistance of a kindly schoolteacher who has a fondness for her. Unbelievably gripping is this story of plights going on today! A must for anyone who wants to better understand human suffering in other parts of the world. Yang doubles the ante he created in his first film BLIND SHAFT by creating totally believble characters and situations. A bit emotionally draining but well worth it in the end!!
