- What is Promise of Justice: End Plantation Prisons Project (2023) about?
- The End Plantation Prisons Project is a partnership between the Promise of Justice Initiative, Decarcerate Louisiana and Professor Andrea Armstrong at Loyola University New Orleans, College of Law. Louisiana is ground zero for forced labor, partly because the state is home to Louisiana State Penitentiary. Commonly known as Angola, the prison occupies an 18,000-acre former plantation, larger than the island of Manhattan. The plantation prison soil worked by incarcerated labor today is the same soil worked during slavery and convict leasing. We collected thousands of documents and interviewed people in prison and those recently returned from prison. This special screening presents a sample of those interviews.
