As the leaves begin to fall outside, the movies beckon us to return to theaters. This year we can feast upon a colorful collection of expansive adventures, intense dramas and berserk comedies. Really, there's something for everyone, so let's dig in!
James Wan, the original director and co-creator of the ‘Saw,’ ‘Insidious’ and ‘The Conjuring Universe’ franchises makes his return to horror filmmaking for one of the most anticipated genre movies of the year. Annabelle Wallis (‘Annabelle’) stars in his latest scary effort as a woman suffering from visions of terrifyingly gruesome murders, which turn out to be real. But does she have more than just a psychic connection to the killings?
From executive producer Martin Scorsese comes the latest from Paul Schrader, writer of the Scorsese classics ‘Taxi Driver’ and ‘Raging Bull’ and director of ‘First Reformed.’ Oscar Isaac stars in the revenge drama as a former military interrogator and ex-convict who now spends his days gambling, specializing in the game of blackjack. Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan and four-time Oscar-nominee Willem Dafoe round out the main cast.
Based on a true story, the comedy stars Kristen Bell (‘Bad Moms’) and Kirby Howell-Baptiste (‘Cruella’) as struggling housewives who wind up making millions of dollars in a counterfeit coupon scheme. Paul Walter Hauser (also ‘Cruella’) and Vince Vaughn (‘Wedding Crashers’) round out the cast as the unlikely authorities tasked with investigating the crime and ultimately taking the scammers down. Be wary of fake discount tickets to this one!
Filmmaker Justin Chon (‘Gook’) wrote, directed and stars in the heartbreaking drama about a Korean-American man in Louisiana facing deportation despite having been adopted and brought to the US, where he has lived since the age of three. Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander (‘The Danish Girl,’ ‘Tomb Raider’) co-stars as the man’s wife who, along with their daughter, fight by his side but fear losing him forever.
From writer-director Joe Carnahan (‘Smokin’ Aces,’ ’The Grey’), comes another action thriller laced with his signature humor and grit. Gerard Butler and Toby Huss star as rival hitmen assigned to kill a con artist, played by Frank Grillo, who gets himself locked up at a small-town police station for protection. Alexis Louder (‘Harriet’) co-stars as a rookie cop trying to keep them from killing each other on her watch.
The latest from 91-year-old actor and director Clint Eastwood is based on the 1975 novel of the same name. The drama also stars the Western icon as a former rodeo cowboy tasked by his old boss to escort a young man (Eduardo Minett) from Mexico to his father (Dwight Yoakam) in America. Eastwood reunited with his 'Gran Torino' and 'The Mule' screenwriter Nick Schenk for the adaptation.
Oscar-nominees Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield transform themselves to portray the notoriously iconic televangelist couple Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker, who became household names in the 1970s and 1980s through their TV appearances, scandals and crimes. The biopic, which is directed by Michael Showalter (‘The Big Sick’) and also stars Vincent D’Onofrio as Jerry Falwell, is adapted from the 2000 documentary feature of the same name.
Based on the smash Broadway hit, this coming-of-age musical stars Ben Platt, who reprises his Tony Award-lauded role from the stage version as the titular teenager. The plot follows Evan’s dishonest claim to having been the best friend of a classmate who killed himself. The adaptation is directed by Stephen Chbosky (‘Wonder’) and features songs by the Oscar-winning duo behind the music of ‘La La Land.’
Cue the famous theme song and get your snapping fingers ready because the creepy, kooky, spooky and ooky Addams clan is back for a sequel to the hit 2019 animated feature based on Charles Addams’ classic cartoons. Starring the voices of Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Snoop Dogg and Bette Midler, the movie follows Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Grandmama and the rest for a family road trip across America.
More than 14 years after ‘The Sopranos’ went off the air, Tony Soprano is back, but younger and now played by Michael Gandolfini, son of the late James Gandolfini, who originated the role on the HBO series. The prequel film is set in the 1960s and 1970s as Tony is drawn into the gangster life. Alessandro Nivola, Ray Liotta and Academy Award nominees Leslie Odom Jr. and Vera Farmiga co-star.
In this sequel to the hit 2018 Marvel Comics adaptation ‘Venom,’ Tom Hardy returns as journalist Eddie Brock, who is bonded to a sentient alien parasite, while Michelle Williams is also back as his ex-fiancee. Woody Harrelson co-stars as serial killer Cletus Kasady, who becomes host to another parasite that turns him into the villain Carnage, with Naomie Harris joining as his love interest. For those counting, that’s four Oscar nominees!
It’s time for a new James Bond movie — six years since the last time we saw 007 in ‘Spectre.’ Daniel Craig returns as the iconic British spy, this time going up against a maniacal terrorist played by Oscar-winner Rami Malek. Léa Seydoux, Jeffrey Wright, Christoph Waltz, Ben Wishaw, Ralph Fiennes and Naomie Harris all reprise their franchise roles while newcomers Ana de Armas and Lashanna Lynch join in the fun.
Michael Myers is still undefeated, despite every effort made by the three generations of Strode/Nelson women (Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer and Andi Matichak) at the end of the 2018 ‘Halloween.’ But they’re going strong as well, and are back to try again in the latest sequel. Joining them are some old franchise players, including Kyle Richards and Nancy Stephens reprising their respective roles from the 1978 original.
From director Ridley Scott (‘Gladiator’) comes a dramatic telling of the last legally sanctioned duel in France, set in the 14th century. Matt Damon and Adam Driver star as rivals who must fight to the death over accusations made by the former’s wife (‘Free Guy’ star Jodie Comer). Damon also co-wrote the screenplay with Nicole Holofcener (‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’) and co-star Ben Affleck.
Sure to look spectacular on the big screen, Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Javier Bardem and Oscar Isaac star in a new adaptation by director Denis Villaneuve ('Arrival,' 'Blade Runner 2049') revolving around a noble family's efforts to protect the most valuable asset in the galaxy.
The story of the friendship that grows between Barney — an ordinary, if awkward, school boy — and Ron, his smart, if frequently malfunctioning, personal device that just happens to walk, talk and get into mischief all on its own.
Wes Anderson and a fabulous company of wonderful actors imagine life in the early 20th century at a provincial French magazine. Timothée Chalemet, Jeffrey Wright, Elisabeth Moss, Saoirse Ronan, Tilda Swinton and Frances McDormand lead the cast.
Prepare for your nerves to be shredded in an unsettling horror-thriller about a school teacher (Keri Russell) and her sheriff brother (Jesse Plemons) who are unwillingly drawn into the dark secrets of a star student (Jeremy T. Thomas), leading them all into terrifying encounters with a mysterious creature.
Director Edgar Wright turns to the dark side of time travel in a dazzling horror mystery. Anya Taylor-Joy stars as an aspiring fashion designer whose dreams of a glamorous life begin to splinter and crack. Thomasin McKenzie, Diana Rigg, Matt Smith and Terence Stamp also star.
The marriage of Diana Spencer and Charles, Prince of Wales, was supposed to be a fairy tale. What happens when the fairy tale is over? That’s the question we watch the now-Princess Diana (Kristen Stewart) grapple with over one holiday with the royal family. We’ll never know exactly what went down, but 'Spencer' – directed by Pablo Larraín ('Jackie') from a script by Steven Knight – is a riveting imagining.
Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan and Kit Harrington headline a Marvel action-adventure extravaganza, directed by Academy Award winner Chloe Zhao. The titular race of immortal beings, who have presided on Earth for centuries in secret, finally emerges to confront the greatest challenge the world has ever faced.
In the rough-and-tumble late 1960s, a young boy and his quite ordinary family learn about the joys and troubles of life in Northern Ireland. Caitriona Balfe, Jamie Dornan, Ciaran Hinds and Judi Dench star in a gripping drama, written and directed by Kenneth Branagh.
Will Smith stars as the unquestioned head of his family, who coached his daughters Venus and Serena Williams to become unstoppable forces in the world of tennis. Jon Bernthal also stars.
A single mother (Carrie Coon) and her two children (Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace) start a new life in a small town, where they discover their family connection to the original team of Ghostbusters and uncover a mysterious legacy that they are bound to explore.
Young Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz) loves her beloved family very much, yet she lacks the magical powers that have been bestowed upon everyone else in town by their wondrous surroundings in remote Colombia. When the magic begins to go away, however, she might be her family's final hope.
Every popular action-horror series needs an origin story. Kaya Scodelario, Robbie Amell, Hannah John-Kamen and Neil McDonough star in a thriller that explores the mysterious origins of Spencer Mansion and Raccoon City. Johannes Roberts ('47 Meters Down') wrote and directed.
If you love good, old-fashioned multigenerational family sagas, you won’t want to miss 'House of Gucci.' Adam Driver, Lady Gaga, Salma Hayek, Jared Leto and Al Pacino portray the main players in the real-life melodrama. Ridley Scott directs.
