As the weather grows colder, what warms your heart most -- a tender family drama? A silly comedy? An animated treat? An adventure in space or time? Here's our guide to help you plan a joyful holiday season at your local movie theater. Watch trailers, get tickets and dream a little holiday dream.
Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) enlist new allies to battle an incredibly powerful enemy. Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) will be showcased, alongside an amazing cast and a surprise appearance or two.
From the Oscar-nominated writer-director of ‘Nightcrawler’ comes a legal drama starring Denzel Washington. The actor shows a side of himself we’ve never seen before, even revealing a gap in his front teeth that he’s covered up his entire career until now, in the role of an attorney who learns some dark secrets about the law firm he’s worked at for years.
A fresh look at the first Christmas, the animated comedy tells events from the perspective of a small yet brave donkey and his intrepid animal friends. Bo (voiced by Steven Yeun) breaks free from a life of servitude, joining with a sheep named Ruth (Aidy Bryant) and a dove known as Dave (Keegan-Michael Key) as they follow a bright star in the sky.
Auggie (Jacob Tremblay) is a boy with facial differences who must overcome big challenges when he starts attending a mainstream school for the first time. Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson play his parents in an inspiring true story. Stephen Chbosky ('The Perks of Being a Wallflower') directs.
Pixar's newest animated adventure is colorful and exciting, traveling to the Land of the Dead as young Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez) teams up with trickster Hector (Gael García Bernal) to learn the real story behind his family's history. The voice cast includes Benjamin Bratt, Cheech Marin and Edward James Olmos.
Gary Oldman stars as Winston Churchill, who becomes Prime Minister as England is enveloped by World War II. Facing the formidable German army, is there any hope for the British people? Can Churchill lead them to victory? Kristin Scott Thomas and Ben Mendelsohn also star in this dramatic true-life tale; Joe Wright ('Atonement') directs.
Facing creative, financial and family pressures, how did Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) create a timeless tale that has brought joy to millions? In this delightful blend of fantasy and history, Christopher Plummer also stars as the immortal Ebenezer Scrooge.
During an Italian summer in 1983, the son of an American professor falls for a graduate student. Armie Hammer, Timothée Chalamet and Michael Stuhlbarg star in a critically-acclaimed romantic drama, directed by Luca Guadagnino ('A Bigger Splash').
One of the hottest biopics of the year is about one of the most infamous filmmakers of all time. James Franco, who also produced and directed the movie, portrays Tommy Wiseau as he makes his 2003 feature debut, ‘The Room,’ which would go on to become a so-bad-it’s-lovable cult classic. Unlike its subject, ‘The Disaster Artist’ has a ton of Oscar buzz.
Part fairytale, part creature feature, Guillermo del Toro’s latest fantasy film presents the romantic story of a mute janitor (Sally Hawkins) and a “fish man” (Doug Jones) being held at the government research facility where she works. Set during the height of the Cold War, the acclaimed drama is said to be the director’s best work since his 2006 award winner ‘Pan’s Labyrinth.’
Woody Allen returns to Coney Island (seen in his classic ‘Annie Hall’) for this nostalgic and brightly colored drama set in 1950s Brooklyn. The movie stars Kate Winslet and Juno Temple as the wife of a carousel operator and her estranged step-daughter, both of whom wind up pursuing a relationship with a handsome lifeguard played by pop icon Justin Timberlake.
A sports scandal for the ages unfolds in this biopic about competitive ice skater Tonya Harding. Margot Robbie commands the screen as the titular Olympian, whose career ended after her husband (played by Sebastian Stan) paid a man to break the legs of her rival (Caitlin Carver). Watch out for Allison Janney, though, stealing scenes as Harding’s foul-mouthed mother and coach.
Somehow this action comedy is the first pairing of Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones. The veteran actors play an ex-mob lawyer and an ex-FBI agent who team up to stop a murder. They are also rivals on the golf course, which is an important detail since the movie is helmed by ‘Tin Cup’ writer/director Ron Shelton.
Based on the classic children’s book ‘The Story of Ferdinand,’ this animated feature is about a Spanish bull who refuses to fight. Wrestler-turned-actor John Cena, who is no stranger to physical matches in a ring, voices the titular pacifist, while Kate McKinnon, Anthony Anderson, Gina Rodriguez, David Tennant, Daveed Diggs and other famous names speak for a variety of other funny animal characters.
Maybe you’ve heard of this one. The next episode of the ‘Star Wars’ saga follows up the events of 2015’s 'The Force Awakens' as Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) returns more prominently to the action, continuing to battle dark forces alongside old friends, such as his sister Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Chewbacca, and new allies, including Rey (Daisy Ridley) and the adorable Porgs.
Inspired by the visionary life of P.T. Barnum, Hugh Jackman takes on the central role of a magnificent entrepreneur who created a mesmerizing spectacle that became a worldwide sensation. Featuring songs by Academy Award winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul ('La La Land'), the movie also stars Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya.
In a sequel to the beloved original, four teenagers journey to the world of Jumanji, where they embark on a fantastic yet dangerous jungle adventure in the bodies of their avatars, played by Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan.
Ridley Scott's real-life thriller follows a mother (Michelle Williams) whose son (Charlie Plummer) is kidnapped and held for ransom. But when his billionaire grandfather J. Paul Getty (Christopher Plummer) refuses to pay, his mother and a family advisor (Mark Wahlberg) must seek his release on their own.
Matt Damon portrays a man who decides he would have a better life if he were to shrink himself. His wife (Kristen Wiig) is not so sure. Christoph Waltz and Hong Chau also star in Alexander Payne's biting social satire.
Owen Wilson and Ed Helms are Kyle and Peter Reynolds, brothers whose eccentric mother raised them to believe their father had died when they were young. When they discover this to be a lie, they set out together to find their real father, and end up learning more about their mother than they probably ever wanted to know.
The beloved Bellas, recognized as world champions, have gone their separate ways, but reunite for a competition on an overseas USO tour, where they face their biggest challenge yet: a group that combines instruments and voices. Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brittany Snow, Ruby Rose and Elizabeth Banks star.
Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep star in Steven Spielberg's dramatization of the so-called Pentagon Papers case, in which the government attempted to block the publication of confidential documents that revealed a decades-long cover-up. The supporting cast includes Carrie Coon, Sarah Paulson, Alison Brie and Bruce Greenwood.
Will Smith and 'Suicide Squad' director David Ayer reteam for an action-thriller flick set in Los Angeles, available only on Netflix. In a city teeming with tension between the species, human police officer Ward must partner with the LAPD's first orc (Joel Edgerton) to solve the mystery of a powerful object, even as they are embroiled in a vicious turf war. Noomi Rapace also stars.

Jessica Chastain stars in the true story of a woman who overcame the odds to run the most exclusive high-stakes poker game in the world, attracting wealthy businessmen and celebrities alike. When she is targeted by the FBI, she hires a top-tier lawyer (Idris Elba) to help her win the case. Aaron Sorkin ('The Social Network') makes his directorial debut.
In what may be his final role, Daniel Day-Lewis stars as an acclaimed dressmaker in 1950s London who has a tempestuous relationship with his muse and lover (Vicky Krieps). Paul Thomas Anderson wrote and directed; he previously teamed with Day-Lewis on 'There Will Be Blood.'
