OscarFor the first time in the history of this weekly column, I’m turning it around on you, the reader, and asking for your five favorite Best Picture Oscar winners (hence the title change from The Five to Your Five!). The Academy Awards date all the way back to 1927/1928 when the film Wings took home the first ever Best Picture award, and so, naturally, there are a lot of films to choose from.

But which ones really, truly stand out for you? Let’s face it: not all of the Best Picture winners go on to become movies we can watch over and over again. I mean, more times than not the film that takes home that award is nowhere near the film that made the most money at the box office that year (though Avatar could prove to be the exception in 2010). Still, I’m sure most of these movies hold a special place in your heart, and I bet you can pull out a title and remember exactly where you were in your life when that film was all the buzz. Or is it rage? What’s the cool word the kids are using these days?

RockyAnyway, in no particular order, here are my five:
1.       The Godfather Part II (1974)
2.       Annie Hall (1977)
3.       Rocky (1976)
4.       The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
5.       Rain Man (1988)

I’ll spare you all the different ways in which these films made it onto my list, as I’m sure you won’t argue against their awesomeness. Plus, I want this post to be more about you and your favorites, and less about me hogging up all the attention.

Since I know you don’t remember every single Best Picture winner ever, use this list as a guide and sound off in the comments section with your five favorite Best Picture winners of all time!
