The Memorial Day Weekend used to mark the official start of the summer movie season (that is before Spider-Man debuted in early May and broke box office records), and based on the numbers it would appear M-Day is looking to take back those honors. The Hangover 2 premiered to mondo box office returns, all but confirming a third (and probably final) installment in the series. With $86 million over the weekend ($105 million including Friday; $137.4 million including Thursday), the raunchy sequel smashed records (for a live-action comedy).
Meanwhile, opening up against The Hangover 2 proved hurtful for Kung Fu Panda 2, which, despite receiving more critical praise than its competition, still clocked in at only $47.8 million (Friday-Sunday), which wasn’t bad, but was less than the original made ($60 million) when it opened on a non-holiday weekend. Does that mean lights out for Po and his band of kung-fu fightin’ misfits? Will DreamWorks have a hard time filling the Shrek void, or will the How to Train Your Dragon movies make up for it?
