Another weekend in the books, and Thor’s hammer maintained enough tenacity to top the box office yet again with a healthy $34 million, bringing its domestic gross to $119 million. But the big story this weekend didn’t revolve around Thor – instead, it was all about the ladies. Or, well, Bridesmaids to be more precise. The R-rated female comedy is something of an underdog in today’s marketplace, especially one that’s written by women and stars women, but isn’t your typical schmaltzy romantic comedy. Bridesmaids – and its $26 million second-place opening – proved not only that smart female comedy still exists (and makes money), but also that it can be enjoyed by both sexes. Here’s hoping Hollywood takes more fun risks on female-driven stuff in the future because Bridesmaids was a refreshing surprise.
