We all had a feeling Fast Five was going to win the weekend, but no one expected it to absolutely demolish the box office. The fifth installment in the underground racing franchise opened to a whopping $83.6 million, setting an April record while automatically signaling a green light for more sequels. The biggest opening of the year could be a good sign for the upcoming Summer Movie Season, which officially begins this week with the release of Thor.
Unfortunately, the week’s other new releases didn’t even come remotely close to matching Fast Five’s success. Prom was the only new release to squeeze its way into the top five, finding itself in the fifth spot with only $5 million. Existing releases made up the remaining top five, with Rio finishing second with $14.4 million, followed by Madea’s Big Happy Family ($10.1 million) and Water for Elephants ($9.12 million). Hoodwinked Too! slipped into sixth place with $4.14 million, and Dylan Dog (with its $885,000) didn’t even manage to make the top ten.
Out of all the new releases, Fast Five was the most well received over at Rotten Tomatoes with a 79% Fresh rating, proving that sometimes the fifth installment is the best installment. Meanwhile, Hoodwinked Too took the hardest critical hit with a 10% Rotten rating.
