Despite being hit with a ton of negative critical reviews, Pixar’s second lap with the Cars franchise managed to pull in $68 million to easily claim the top spot at the box office. The total was the fifth-highest opening for a Pixar movie to date and out-grossed the first Cars flick which pulled in $60 million in 2006.
Audiences were also hot for Bad Teacher. The Cameron Diaz-Justin Timberlake comedy raked in an impressive $31 million to claim second place while defending box office champion Green Lantern was knocked down to third. Super 8 and Mr. Popper’s Penguins rounded out the top five.
Meanwhile, the little movie that could, Midnight in Paris, continued to add to its total, pulling in another $4.5 million, increasing its sum to $28.5 million. Paris is now the fourth highest grossing Woody Allen movie with its sights now set on Annie Hall and Manhattan.
