It took years for Disney to finally release a sequel to TRON (28 years to be exact), and now that we have TRON: Legacy – with its sleek, spiffy, high-tech shine – we want to know whether it was worth the wait. TRON: Legacy shot to the top of the box office this past weekend, albeit with a fairly weak $43 million, especially considering all the advance buzz and higher 3D ticket prices. But maybe the low numbers are due to people spending this weekend finishing up their last-minute holiday shopping, and TRON: Legacy will just maintain a steady box office pace as we cross over into 2011.
Sure, Avatar opened with more this time last year ($77 million), but that was a James Cameron film being sold on its technological advancements. People felt they had to see it in order to experience this new wave of 3D. One year later and moviegoers may be suffering from 3D fatigue. Either that, or maybe they just didn't "get" TRON; perhaps it looked too sci-fi and not accessible enough.
