Guess what everyone: A new X-Men movie hits theaters this weekend and it's actually pretty damn good! 20th Century Fox should be stoked to see all the positive buzz surrounding X-Men: First Class, and assuming that buzz translates to big box office, we could see director Matthew Vaughn's stock rise higher than it's ever been before.

Since the X-Men franchise is such a big, well-known beast at the box office, it'll arrive all by itself in wide release this weekend, which may give it a giant advantage. That said, it's hard to count out The Hangover 2, which broke records last weekend. Let's back up first and take a look at this week's new wide release…
X-Men: First Class
What's the Scoop: This X-Men prequel sort of reboots the entire franchise by casting James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as a younger Professor X and Magneto before they took on their superhero identities and were just a couple of mutants trying to find their own way in the world. Set in the 1960s, this installment tells the story of how the X-Men came to be, and how the very real Cuban Missile Crisis played a major role in the future of the franchise.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: Because it's the only major new wide release, and it's a massive Marvel superhero property that a lot of folks already know and love. Plus, the film rocks pretty hard.
My Prediction: Despite the really strong opening for The Hangover 2, I think the strong buzz for X-Men: First Class will ultimately help the film triumph over the comedy sequel.
My Pick of the Week: In case it's not obvious enough, I really dug X-Men: First Class, and if you're any sort of comic book/superhero movie fan, you will too.
