Are you ready for another Hangover? How about some more Kung Fu? Or maybe you’re just excited for a three-day weekend? Whatever the case may be, we’ve officially hit Memorial Day Weekend, which means a lot of beach-going, BBQ’n and movie watching. Naturally, Hollywood has saved some of their biggest and baddest films for Memorial Day Weekend, which means you’ll have plenty of buzzed-about entertainment waiting for you at the local multiplex should you feel the need to venture into a darkened movie theater over the course of the next few days. Let’s take a look at what’s new …
What’s the Scoop: Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, and Ed Helms return for another raunchy, foul-mouthed R-rated go-round in which they get really trashed, black out and then must piece together the wild night they don’t remember in order to get another one of their cohorts (this time Stu) down the aisle in time.
Why It Might Win The Weekend: The first Hangover was a massive hit, and the highest grossing R-rated movie of the year. It’s already smashed Fandango records (for both advanced and day-of ticket sales), and we expect it to do big business during summer’s second biggest weekend.
What’s the Scoop: In the other corner we have another sequel, only this one is kid-friendly and parent approved. Jack Black returns as the voice of everyone’s favorite kung fu panda, Po, in a new adventure that finds him teaming up with a bunch of new kung fu masters in an attempt to take down a familiar (and lethal) enemy.
Why It Might Win The Weekend: Animated films have been dominating the box office these past couple months, and the original Kung Fu Panda is beloved by many. Definitely wouldn’t count Po and the gang out of this race, that’s fo sho!
My Prediction: If you line up the previous installments of both franchises, The Hangover beat Kung Fu Panda by $4 million in its opening weekend. So, I’m going to go by those numbers and pick The Hangover 2 to win it.
My Pick of the Week: I’m a sucker for the original Kung Fu Panda, and advanced buzz says the second one is just as good (if not better), so that’s my recommendation right there. See Kung Fu Panda 2, but don’t go trying any of that kung fu on your friends at home (unless it’s on your annoying kid brother).
