Remember those days when everyone you knew with a smartphone was playing Angry Birds all day and all night? It was one of the first mobile games to truly conquer all corners of the market -- from little kids to grown adults, if you weren't already addicted to Angry Birds then why even exist?

Then, like things always do, we moved on to other feverishly addictive games -- but the appetite for Angry Birds was still there, so much so that a movie was announced. Due out on May 20, 2016, Angry Birds features a voice cast stuffed with some very, very funny people, including Maya Rudolph, Peter Dinklage, Jason Sudeikis, Danny McBride, Bill Hader, Jillian Bell, Keegan-Michael Key, Tony Hale and Josh Gad.

Seriously, that cast is pretty great -- and now Josh Gad is talking about the movie in ways that might actually surprise you cynics out there who are all like, "An Angry Birds movie? Psshh, whatevs."

Speaking to IGN, Gad says...

“When I was approached about it, I actually said no, for many reasons, the most significant of which was I did Olaf [in Frozen] and I don't want to play another animated character, especially right now. The producer was like ‘Just let me kind of pitch out this movie to you’ and did this reel for me of what he was thinking about, and it was this 30-minute visual pitch and it blew my socks off.

“It’s really irreverent, and like that Lego Movie sensibility it’s subversive and funny and unexpectedly smart and really beautiful. Actually gorgeous. The little I’ve seen of it has really impressed me.”

Smart? Beautiful? Gorgeous? Could Angry Birds quietly become one of the breakout hits of 2016? And we say "quietly" because we haven't heard much about this movie yet, save for the image at the top of this page.

And if you're wondering who Gad is playing... well, he's the yellow one.

Is Angry Birds shaping up to become the next Lego Movie-type sensation?

It just might be. The concept definitely has potential because the game itself -- in which angry birds attempt to take out evil pigs using elaborate slingshots -- is just oozing the sort of ridiculousness that could work very well in a feature-length story. Plus it was written by longtime Simpsons vet (and screenwriter of the Simpsons Movie), Jon Vitti -- a fact that should bring a smile to you fans of The Simpsons out there.

So we're optimistic that this movie... wait, hang on -- Angry Birds has version of the game themed to the NBA Finals. Hold that thought, we've got some pigs to slam-dunk.
