After Angelina Jolie turned down the same role twice for unspecified reasons, the much buzzed-about female role in Alfonso Cuaron's 3D sci-fi flick Gravity may be going to Natalie Portman instead. The Warner Bros. film has been all over the news lately as it attempts to nail down an actress to play what looks to be a very demanding role – one that will focus solely on a woman stranded in a space station after her entire crew (one of which is played by Robert Downey Jr.) is killed off in a tragic accident. The film then follows the woman as she tries to get back home.

Natalie Portman

It's a role that definitely requires some serious acting chops – and it's one you'd think female actresses would be clawing each other over – but for some reason Jolie didn't want it (twice), and after names like Rachel Weisz, Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively were thrown around, Risky Business says Warner Bros. has officially offered the role to Natalie Portman, who is already gaining a large amount of Oscar buzz after her upcoming film Black Swan screened at both the Venice and Telluride film festivals.

So, could Natalie Portman follow up one Oscar-worthy performance with another? And does this sound like a good role for her, or does Angelina Jolie come off as a stronger actress – perhaps because of all her action films? Who do you think would be better in a film like Gravity: Jolie or Portman?
