Fresh From Theaters

The new year's first wide theatrical release comes home. Smash-hit M3GAN embraces horror-movie tropes with a wink, a nod and a twist. Make that multiple twists, courtesy of screenwriter Akela Cooper and directer Gerard Johnstone, as they introduce busy yet kind-hearted robotics engineer Allison Williams, who designs a robotic companion, code-named M3GAN, to help her young niece Cady (Violet McGraw) cope with unimaginable tragedy. Things quickly spiral out of control, though, when M3GAN develops a mind of her own.

We love movies that catch us off-guard, which is just one reason why we love Twists and Turns. The movies are great even without their narrative twists and character turns, but owning them allows revising them to see how the filmmakers did it. Pick from among the surprising The Sixth Sense, starring Bruce Willis, the bruising action in Fight Club, starring Brad Pitt, and Jordan Peele's startling Us.

Actors Spotlight shines on actors who move easily from supporting to lead roles: the rough and charming Danny Huston, the adorably funny Jennifer Coolidge, the cool and dramatic Ken Watanabe and the warm and wonderful Radha Mitchell.
