Many of this year's hottest movies premiered over the weekend at the Telluride Film Festival, and that means we're now officially into Oscar season. The festival quartet that also includes the ongoing Venice Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival (which starts tomorrow) and the upcoming New York Film Festival has been a launching pad in recent years for the big Academy Awards contenders.

Of course, most of us won't get to see these titles for anywhere between a month and six months as we hear the buzz from festgoers, critics and anyone in NYC and L.A. during limited qualifying runs in only a couple theaters. That means that if we want to talk Oscar potential with any authority we have to consider only those films that came out between January 1 and today that we've had the opportunity to see.

So, what movie so far has a shot at Best Picture? What actors and actresses are deserving of a statue?

Last year by this time, we'd already seen the release of eventual Best Picture nominee Beasts of the Southern Wild and eventual Original Screenplay nominee Moonrise Kingdom, but that's about it. Maybe the top categories aren't too easily foreseen just yet, but there's a good chance you've already seen the Best Animated Feature nominees released: Monsters University? Despicable Me 2? The Croods? 

And the same goes for at least some of the possibilities for the Best Visual Effects Oscar. Did anything this summer wow you on the level of last year's crop, which included The Avengers and Prometheus? Should the Iron Man franchise go three for three? Will Star Trek Into Darkness repeat the honor received by its predecessor? Should Man of Steel become the third Superman movie to be nominated in the category?

As for one more award that's already been discussed, Lee Daniels' The Butler has been named as a Best Makeup and Hairstyling contender. Do you think it's worthy? Should the popular film garner any other nominations?
