In our increasingly digital world, Colossal Media is a unicorn amongst machines. The Brooklyn-based company is the largest hand-painted mural and outdoor advertising company in the world. Its large-scale, photorealistic artworks are familiar to New Yorkers, but website the Credits captured the company on film for the rest of the world to watch in action.

Its process recalls the work of traditional sign painters from the past who created banners, billboards and more.

In the Credits’ new video below, Colossal creates three murals promoting Jonathan Liebesman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (now in theaters). Each is about 15-feet high, and the one located at Bogart and Thames in Williamsburg is more than 65 feet across.

The clip takes us through the company’s workday and process, which starts like most: with a good cup of coffee. Then it’s on to sketching a life-size replica of the design before applying it to the wall. Paint is added, details are fleshed out, and another eye-catching mural is complete — an advert that looks more like a work of art than a commercial billboard.
