Robert De Niro is everywhere these days. He's got one new movie, Heist, that opened theatrically last Friday. Another new movie, Dirty Grandpa, has a brand new NSFW trailer online this week.

And here's yet another movie, titled Ellis, which debuted on Facebook, free to stream. (Pair this movie with... Brooklyn, in theaters now. Watch the trailer.)

Ellis, which premiered last month at the New York Film Festival, is a 14-minute short starring the actor as the ghost of all immigrants who passed through Ellis Island and all those who couldn't. Directed by the street artist known only as JR, it's a film that is semidocumentary in its tour of the island's old hospital and poetic in the voiceover narration spoken by De Niro as he walks its halls.

The script was written by Eric Roth, best known for Forrest Gump and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and the project began more than three years ago. It's only a coincidence that it was finally finished this fall as the Syrian refugee crisis continued to escalate. JR notes the even more serious relevance of the film this week on his caption to the Facebook post:

From wars to refugee crisis, from terror attacks to global warming, we are living in a time of radical change. Will we stand united against violence? Will we welcome people of different ethnic and religious backgrounds into the countries we now call home? Our choices define who we are and shape the world we live in. We all come from somewhere...

Although born in New York City, De Niro is the descendent of Italian and Irish immigrants who were processed at Ellis Island in the 1800s. He also played an iconic character depicted going through the famous gateway to America: Vito Corleone of The Godfather movies. The actor reportedly collaborated on Ellis because of his background.
