Fans of the Mortal Kombat video game franchise have been waiting awhile to check out the new series of webisodes, the first of which just arrived online this week. These have an interesting backstory in that Warner Premiere commissioned the 10-part series following a short, well-produced viral video that made the rounds last year, injecting a whole lot of awesomeness back into a franchise that hasn’t been all that successful when it comes to live-action films (though the 1995 film will always hold a special campy place in my heart).
Co-written and directed by Kevin Tancharoen (Fame), and starring folks like Jeri Ryan (Sonja Blade), Michael Jai White (Jax) and Darren Shaglavi (Kano), the first webisode finds Sonja, Jax and their team of law enforcement agents attempting to hunt down the powerful Kano, who’s running a crime ring that includes the production of some highly-dangerous weapons.
Fan favorites like Johnny Cage, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, Raiden, and Reptile are nowhere to be seen … yet, and the stylized action is a tad over-the-top to start out with, but the production value is pretty solid (especially for an online webisode).
