Today in Movie Culture: ‘Shazam!’ Meets ‘Big,’ ‘Captain Marvel’ VFX Breakdown and More

Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture:

Mashup of the Day:

Well, this was inevitable. Ever wish Tom Hanks had starred in a superhero movie? Shazam! is heavily inspired by the classic Hanks-led fantasy comedy Big, so Nerdist went ahead and perfectly mashed the trailer for the new entry in the DC Extended Universe franchise with that and other Hanks movies, including The ‘Burbs and Joe Versus the Volcano:

Cosplay of the Day:

Captain Marvel held onto the top spot at the box office over the weekend, as the title character pulls in more of its fans and acquires new ones. That means we’ll continue to see lots of Carol Danvers cosplay. Marvel Entertainment showcases three cosplayers inspired by the character and the new movie in the latest episode of their series Marvel Becoming:

VFX Breakdown of the Day:

Marvel also presents this video that breaks down the visual effects of Captain Marvel, including the work that went into Carol’s superpowers, the Skrull shapeshifting transformations and the portrayal of Goose — when a real cat wasn’t involved:

Film Theory of the Day:

While watching Captain Marvel, did you wonder why the main character is never referred to as Captain Marvel? That Film Theory takes on the question and offers the speculation that the answer could have something to do with Carol taking over as leader of the Avengers and the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise as a replacement for the departing Captain America:

Fan Art of the Day:

Everyone is loving the moment in the new Avengers: Endgame trailer when Captain Marvel shows up and has some instant chemistry with Thor. To keep us excited about the upcoming MCU tentpole and give us a taste while we wait just over a month more for its release, here’s some fan art by Marsha Niemeijer pairing up the two intergalactic superheroes as “the mightiest heroes.”

Fan Build of the Day:

Speaking of The Avengers, want to see the closest thing we have to Iron Man in real life? Richard Browning from Gravity Industries built his own jet suit so he can fly around like the Marvel superhero. And in this The Hacksmith video, he gets a new Iron Man helmet to complete the look:

Marketing Breakdown of the Day:

Fans have been wondering how the trailers for Avengers: Endgame might be missing characters or otherwise misleading viewers the way the Avengers: Infinity War ads did with its Hulk appearances. In response, Screen Rant looks into how movie marketing is able to be craftier with the footage it presents these days:

Easter Eggs of the Day:

Speaking of movie trailers, if you’ve seen the latest ad for the upcoming Pet Sematary, you might have missed some things that are right there for the fans of the Stephen King novel it’s based on. Here’s CZsWorld with a look at all the Easter eggs and other goodies in the trailer for the remake, which just premiered at SXSW to positive reviews:

Filmmaker in Focus:

Jordan Peele’s new horror movie, Us, comes out this week, and Fandango sat down recently with stars Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke about their experience working together again. The two were previously part of the ensemble of Marvel’s Black Panther, so they discuss the difference in filmmaking styles between Peele and Ryan Coogler:

Movie Comparison of the Day:

With Disney’s live-action reimagining of the classic Dumbo hitting theaters soon, editor Math Virecoulon compares scenes from the new movie and their animated counterparts from the 1942 original side by side. Even though the remake extends the story from the original, there are plenty parallels to appreciate here:
