'Three Billboards' and 'Lady Bird' Top the 2018 SAG Awards Nominations

'Three Billboards' and 'Lady Bird' Top the 2018 SAG Awards Nominations

Frances McDormand Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

The Screen Actors Guild announced the nominees for the 24th annual SAG Awards this morning, and a few movies continue to hold strong with this year's major honors, while others are making advances in the race toward the Oscars.

The Shape of Water was once again recognized for the performances by lead actress Sally Hawkins and supporting actor Richard Jenkins, while Lady Bird also maintained its favor with nods for lead actress Saoirse Ronan and supporting actress Laurie Metcalf. The movie is also up for the Best Ensemble award.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri got a boost by leading the pack of nominated movies with four contenders across three categories -- both Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell are competing for Best Supporting Actor, joining Best Actress hopeful Frances McDormand and the entire main cast in the Best Ensemble category.

Other favorites whose nods seem to ensure Oscar love later in the season include The Big Sick, which is up for Best Ensemble and Best Supporting Actress for Holly Hunter, Mudbound, which is also up for Best Ensemble and Best Supporting Actress, for Mary J. Blige, and Get Out, which is up for Best Ensemble and Best Actor for Daniel Kaluuya.

The Best Ensemble category is considered by many to be the SAG Awards' equivalent to Best Picture, so it's very possible that all three of those movies, as well as Lady Bird and Three Billboards will be among the contenders for the Oscars' top honor. Best Ensemble and Best Picture have only synched up with all five nominees twice in the last 10 years, however.

The pleasant surprises among these nominees include Downsizing supporting actress Hong Chau, who could very well find an Oscar nod at this point, Battle of the Sexes co-star Steve Carell up for Best Supporting Actor, Roman J. Israel, Esq. star Denzel Washington up for Best Actor, and Victoria and Abdul star Dame Judi Dench up for Best Actress, which makes her 14th SAG Awards nod.
