The much-anticipated nominations for the 67th Golden Globe Awards were just handed out, and while it may just look like another best-of-the-year list, the Globes are regarded as one of the most important Academy Award forecasters. Unlike the Oscars, though, the Globes are a bit more relaxed, and not only are awards given out (by the Hollywood Foreign Press) for TV as well as movies, but there’s a Musical/Comedy category too.

This year they’ll be switching things up by allowing Ricky Gervais to host the ceremony, which you’ll be able to watch live on January 17th at 5pm PST/8pm PST. Before we get to all the nominations (which were handed out by Justin Timberlake, John Krasinski and Diane Kruger) here are some of the major surprises/upsets:

Surprises
  • Sandra Bullock was nominated twice (!) for Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) for The Proposal, and Best Actress (Drama) for The Blind Side.
  • Both Anna Kendrick and Vera Fermiga were nominated for best supporting actress for Up in the Air.
  • Meryl Streep nominated for two awards in the same category: Best Supporting Actress for Julie and Julia and It’s Complicated.
  • Give it up to Tobey Maguire for scratching out a nod for his terrific, overpowering performance in Brothers.
  • Fan favorite District 9 managed a nod for Best Screenplay.
  • Julia Roberts (yay!) nudged out a nod for Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) for her turn in Duplicity.
  • Robert Downey Jr. lands a nod for Sherlock Holmes!
  • Matt Damon scores a supporting nod for Invictus.
  • Great year for women directors, with the following female-directed movies recognized: Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker, Nora Ephron's Julie & Julia, Anne Fletcher's The Proposal, Nancy Meyers' It's Complicated and Lone Scherfig's An Education.

Snubs
  • Despite all the buzz, Rob Marshall was not nominated for Best Director for the movie-musical Nine, which will definitely hurt his (and the film’s) chances come Oscar time.
  • Lee Daniels was also left off the Best Directors list for Precious.
  • Viggo Mortensen’s gut-wrenching performance in The Road went unnoticed.
  • Other performances that were buzzed about and failed to show up with a nod include Alfred Molina (An Education), Peter Sarsgaard (An Education) and the amazing Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker.
