Ever since fans were critical of Spider-Man 3 because of the multiple villains factor, folks have been after Sam Raimi to reveal which (and how many) villains would be included in the fourth installment. Unfortunately Raimi continues to play dumb when it comes to Spidey 4, insisting that they're still trying to figure out the script and storyline – slowly carving out the right premise as if it will one day hang next to the Mona Lisa in Paris.
But MTV continues to pester the writer-director each and every time they have the chance, and since Drag Me to Hell arrives on DVD today (definitely make sure you pick that up), MTV managed to ask Raimi a few more questions regarding the villains in Spidey 4 (due in theaters on May 6, 2011).
On whether the villain will turn out to be either the Lizard or Carnage, Raimi says: "I love the Lizard. There's a great story in the Marvel comics about Dr. Connors. I'm less familiar with Carnage." He then paused and added, "I'm not allowed to say at this point." Okay, wonderful – maybe it's Lizard, maybe it's not. That clears things up.
In the meantime, what should we expect from the storyline this time around? Raimi notes, "What we're trying to do right now is really understand the journey Peter is going to go on this time and have the villain maybe be a counter to that growth, something that he has to overcome. Or maybe he has to grow in a way to overcome the villain, because there always seem to be stories of coming of age, of a young man growing up and learning things about life, so once we are identifying the exact movement that Peter has to grow to, I think the villain—and we're trying this right now; we're trying to choose a villain based on who would be the proper counter to that growth, so we really have dramatic conflict."
Personally, I think Peter Parker has grown enough through three films. How about this time around he just kicks some monster ass? What do you think? Which villains would you like to see in Spider-Man 4?
