Later this week, Ryan Gosling will don a fedora and trench coat to play a member of the Gangster Squad in Ruben Fleischer’s period crime thriller. And while we’re eagerly anticipating that L.A. noir, we’re also looking ahead to Gosling’s next collaboration with his Drive director, Nicolas Winding Refn.

Titled Only God Forgives, the film reportedly is set in the shady world of Thailand’s underground kickboxing circuit. It’s expected to be as gritty and suspenseful as Drive, and the photos that we’ve seen leading up to the start of this year have shown a beaten and bandaged Gosling. Now we have a teaser clip for the film, which also sells the pain. Check it out below:

The quality of the clip is suspect, but that could be intentional if Refn – a gifted visualist – is trying to mimic a style of grindhouse genre cinema from the late 1960s and early 1970s. We could totally see that being the case.

Gosling will be joined by Kristin Scott Thomas and Tom Burke in the gangster drama, which doesn’t have a firm release date and likely will test the waters at film festivals as the year progresses. Are you excited by it? Did you love Drive as much as we did? Because thanks to Drive, I’ll see anything Refn does, particularly with Gosling. Stay tuned.
