With 'Glee' being one of the most popular shows on television right now, Hollywood seems to be thumbing through all its wackiest music-related projects to see which ones could be resurrected for the big screen via 'Glee' creator (and director) Ryan Murphy. Deadline claims that Murphy has been approached to direct a remake of the 1975 movie-musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which, as some of you might know, is a film that's become the very definition of cult phenomenon over the years.
To this day you'll still find midnight screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, with groups of devoted fans dressing up for sing-a-longs and ritualistic partying. Sure, it's good times for those who grew up with the movie, but could a film like this actually work with today's audiences? Not for nothing, but a couple years ago we may have said the same thing about 'Glee,' and look what that show has turned into. Perhaps this is why they want Murphy behind the project, so that he can tap into the mindsets of a new generation and deliver them a 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' that will explode into the most popular thing ever.
I'm still not convinced, though I'm also not a diehard fan of the original. Is this a film that should be left alone and maybe revived in some big splashy re-release, or could it use a new, updated look? Let us know what you think below…
