Back in 1987, Paul Verhoeven’s RoboCop felt cutting edge, a mixture of robotics and bloody crime antics that brought the action-cop genre into the realms of science fiction. By rebooting the franchise, director Jose Padilha probably hopes to lean on some of the technological tools that are at a storyteller’s disposal in the year 2013… IMAX technology being one of them.

And so MGM and Sony announced that Padilha’s RoboCop will open in IMAX theaters worldwide when it reaches theaters on February 7, 2014. 
 
"Jose Padilha has reimagined this story in an exciting new way and we're thrilled to partner with MGM and Sony to bring it to audiences worldwide in the most immersive format: IMAX," said Greg Foster, CEO of IMAX Entertainment and senior executive vice president, IMAX Corp.
 
Rory Bruer, president of Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures, added, "IMAX and RoboCop are the perfect match. What a great way to see this visceral, action-packed film."

That’s Joel Kinnaman of AMC’s The Killing playing Detective Alex Murphy, police officer in a crime-choked city who transforms into RoboCop following a devastating accident. The supporting cast is to die for, including Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson. The film promises to make upgrades over Verhoeven’s beloved cult classic… but can they do enough to convince fans that RoboCop needed a reboot in the first place?
