It’s the quiet before the Harry Potter storm, as this weekend hosts a couple of new comedies that will have a brief head start before facing the box office behemoth that is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 next weekend. Because Harry Potter is only one week away, that’s why you’re not seeing any other big blockbusters swinging into theaters right now – no one wants to compete against a boy wizard and his final film. But we’re not there … yet, so in the meantime let’s take a look at what we’ve got going on this weekend.

What’s The Scoop: This foul-mouthed, R-rated comedy stars Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis as three guys who hate their bosses (played by Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston and Colin Farrell) and desperately want to see them go away (as in die), thus hatching a plan to rid themselves of their superiors permanently.
Why It Might Win The Weekend: Folks may be feeling the R-rated comedy fever after both Bridesmaids and Bad Teacher, and so this one could be arriving at the perfect time. Plus, those pissed to be working during the summer may find some comfort in a movie about people killing their bosses.
 
What’s The Scoop: Kevin James plays a zookeeper who’s amazed to learn that the animals in the zoo can all talk … and help him find love at the same time.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: It’s got talking animals in it, so there’s a start.
 
My Prediction: While both comedies will appeal to a wide range of people, it’ll be hard to stop Transformers: Dark of the Moon from dominating another weekend. I’ll go with the robots on this one.
 
My Pick of the Week: Skip the comedies and catch the fantastic Sundance documentary Project Nim, which tracks the real-life story of a chimpanzee that was removed from its mother at birth in the 1970s and raised as if it were a human child in a family. Chances are strong that this will be one of the frontrunners for Best Documentary Oscar, so catch it now and stay ahead of the buzz.
