Guillermo del Toro’s sequel to his mech-vs.-monsters movie Pacific Rim is like three years off in the future, but that hasn’t stopped Legendary Pictures from teasing fans with the below photo on its Facebook page.

The new poster is pretty cool looking, with a giant oceanic vortex opening and threatening to suck in all the big military ships in the area. Presumably this is another transdimensional portal so the Kaiju can return to wreak havoc on Earth. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, right?

Del Toro, meanwhile, has revealed that he’s not only hard at work on Pacific Rim II, but he’s also planning a third film that will conclude the trilogy.

“Some of your favorite characters come back, some others don’t because we have decided that we’re going to shoot ambitiously and say ‘Let’s hope we have three movies,’ so some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one.”

Details about the second film are being kept under wraps, so obviously we know absolutely nothing about how a third film might play out – or which characters could be returning. Pacific Rim II is slated to open on April 7, 2017.
