Gambit: Marvel's Gambit, starring Channing Tatum (above in Jupiter Ascending) as a Southern card shark and ladies' man with superpowers, now needs a new director. Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Gambler) has stepped aside, citing scheduling conflicts created when the start of production on the movie got pushed recently. It's not known what project Wyatt will be working on instead. Lea Seydoux is set to costar with Tatum; filming is expected to begin in the early spring next year. [Deadline]
Mary Poppins 2: We just heard that Disney is developing a sequel to 1964's Mary Poppins, and popular actresses are already being touted for the lead role. A new rumor suggests that Emily Blunt is "on Disney's radar" and "may even be the front-runner." Rob Marshall, who directed Blunt in last year's musical Into the Woods (pictured), is on board the project, but it's still very early in the process, so expect more casting possibilities to make the rounds before a final decision is made. Dork Diaries: Mark Waters, who enjoyed great success with Mean Girls (above with Lindsay Lohan), is in negotiations to direct Dork Diaries, based on a young-adult book series by Rachel Renee Russell. The books have been translated into 36 languages worldwide; they revolve around a girl named Nikki Maxwell and her adventures at a private middle school. Lionsgate, the studio behind the Twilight, Hunger Games and Divergent series, hopes that the first movie will launch a new franchise. [The Hollywood Reporter]
