News Briefs: 'Magnificent Seven' Gets a Nasty Villain; 'Transformers' Sequels and Spin-offs Move Forward


The Magnificent Seven: Peter Sarsgaard, who has played nasty, brutish characters in the past (Lovelace, above), is in final negotiations to take on a villainous role in The Magnificent Seven. He would join Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Haley Bennett, Luke Grimes and Matt Bomer; Antoine Fuqua is set to direct. Transformers: Age of Extinction

Transformers: Writer-producer Akiva Goldman, who was recently charged with developing sequels and spin-offs for the Transformers cinematic universe, has tapped key creative talents to join his so-called "writer's room." To begin with, that includes Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead), Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man), Zak Penn (Pacific Rim 2), and Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2); other writers will be added in the future. There is currently no timetable for more Transformers movies. [Deadline]



Blade Runner 2: Roger Deakins, who has received 12 Academy Award nominations for his work as director of photography, is joining director Denis Villeneuve and the Blade Runner 2 crew. Villeneuve and Deakins previously worked together on 2013's thriller Prisoners (above), as well as Sicario, a crime drama that just debuted at the Cannes film festival. [Slashfilm]
