The rumor mill is circulating that the High School Musical diva auditioned for Leah Clearwater—a mean, sulky and annoying lycanthrope. She pretty much stays ill-tempered throughout the saga and, in the final tome, becomes just bearable. Would sweet, smiling, Disney crooner Vanessa Hudgens be fitting? "I think she'd be great," Ashley Greene, who played Alice in Twilight, tells MTV. She also said New Moon’s script is getting another rewrite.
In more Twilight casting news, author Stephenie Meyer announced that Taylor Lautner will be back as werewolf Jacob Black: "I'm truly thrilled that Taylor was the one who proved to the director, to Summit, and to me that he is the best possible Jacob we could have." If his bulging biceps and rippled six pack aren't enough proof, I don't know what is! We're keeping watch to see if Hudgens also receives Meyer's blessing. If she does, New Moon's audience could experience a growth spurt—Twilighters plus Wildcat fans.

Jan. 14 Update! EW.com reports the rumor as false and says neither Summit nor Hudgens' reps are looking at the star for any role in New Moon.
