Pixar Animation Studios has no problem with sequels. Toy Story has two. Cars has one. Finding Nemo’s about to get one.

But Monsters University will be the studio’s first prequel, taking audiences to a time frame before the Monsters Inc. story, and building on the relationship of head creatures Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sully (John Goodman) during their formative college years. A teaser trailer released a few weeks back set up the idea of a Monsters frat. Now Crystal, speaking to EW.com, revealed a few more crucial plot details about how Pixar plans to proceed with younger versions of our beloved characters.

Crystal tells the magazine, “[Mike and Sully] end up in the same fraternity where they have this scare competition -- like Greek Games in college. They have to mobilize a group, sort of like Revenge of the Nerds-monsters, and get them ready to be scary.”

You have to love that irony, as Goodman played a nerd-abusing coach in the 1984 comedy Revenge of the Nerds, so this will be a cycle back to his acting roots. Don’t expect Mike and Sully to be Big Men on Campus, though. Far from it.

“They’re 17 and 18 years old in the script,” Crystal confirms. “My guy has a retainer, even.”

So there you have it: A few more details elaborating on the set up of Monsters University. Here’s that trailer from a few weeks back. The prequel, Pixar’s first, will be in theaters on June 21, 2013.
