Make Killer Donkey Kong Cookies

This summer, retro video games are making a comeback, but not in a friendly way ... they’re here to attack! In the new movie Pixels, classic arcade games battle the Earth in the form of the video game characters.

Donkey Kong was the king of video games in its heyday, and there’s no tastier way to celebrate a game victory than with the king of cookies, Donkey Kong cookies! The chocolate and vanilla combination make it easy to want to jump barrels and save poor Pauline. Ready to bake cookies and take on classic characters? It's on like Donkey Kong!

Donkey Kong Cookies

Chocolate cookie ingredients:

3 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 cup cocoa powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup sugar

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter

1 egg

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Vanilla cookie ingredients:

3 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter

1 cup sugar

1 egg

2 teaspoons vanilla

Gorilla cookie cutter is available from Sweet Prints, Inc.

Directions:

Make both the vanilla and chocolate doughs the same way, by first whisking the dry ingredients in a bowl.

Then in the bowl of an electric mixer, cream the butter and the sugar until just combined, then add the egg and vanilla.

Slowly add the flour mixture until combined. When it pulls away from the sides of the bowl, the dough is ready.

Make the chocolate dough, then the vanilla dough and wrap up them separately in plastic wrap. Refrigerate until you are ready to use.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prep baking sheets with silpats or parchments.

Roll out the chocolate dough to about 3/8 inch thick to make sure you can capture all the detail. Dip the cookie cutter into flour and shake off the excess, then press the cookie cutter into the dough. Take a small knife and run it around the face and chest area, separating the cookie into two pieces so the body is separate. Also cut off the fists.

Move the body to the prepped baking sheet and keep going and cutting out just the Donkey Kong body area from each cookie.

For the vanilla dough, roll out to ? inch thick, flour cookie cutter and cut out just like you did with the chocolate dough. Cutting around the same face and chest area, this time moving those pieces into the missing areas of the chocolate dough, completing the cookie just like a puzzle piece. Add the missing fists.

Bake for 10 minutes and let cool on a wire rack.

Once cooled, use a #2 tip to pipe red frosting for Donkey Kong’s tie and yellow frosting for his initials.

Again, using a #2 tip, pipe the eyes in white frosting, then add black frosting for Donkey Kong’s pupils.

Once the icing is dry the cookies are ready.
