When you look at cute, little Kristen Bell in films like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Couples Retreat, the last thing you think of is … well, mom. But that’s about to change, as Bell is spreading her wings a little bit and looking to star in a film that reminds us very much of Little Miss Sunshine, but with a tiny bit of Mean Girls edge.
The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Bell will star in the black comedy Dance of the Mirlitons (not such a great title – I could see it changing), about an overbearing mom who shoves her awkward, slightly overweight daughter into the world of ballet and will stop at nothing to make the girl a star. Heck, we’ve already seen enough reality shows featuring real-life overly demanding stage parents – and got a taste of it in the film Little Miss Sunshine – and so another feature film that touches on the subject was all but certain eventually.
Producers are looking for an unknown to play the young girl; someone between the ages of 10 and 12. If it works, this could be a fantastic role for Bell – one that takes her away from playing the cute, quirky girlfriend/wife, and puts her squarely in the spotlight in charge of carrying an entire film. Honestly, I’ve been waiting to see Bell make a move like this for awhile, and so the fan in me is psyched to see this flick (plus dark comedies are my favorite).
