In case you were hiding out on Isla Nublar over the weekend and missed the news, Jurassic World absolutely pummeled the box office, raking in $204 million for the year's highest opening as well as second of all time behind Marvel's The Avengers ($207 million). That's big -- like Indominus rex big -- and that also means this franchise is as hot as it's ever been.
While speaking to EW, Jurassic World star Chris Pratt did confirm that he's signed on for additional Jurassic sequels -- "I am. They have me for I think 38 movies or something," he joked. But even with Pratt returning, it's hard to figure out where they'd take a sequel since that dinosaur theme park ain't exactly opening back up anytime soon.
So where does that leave us?
The Two Most Likely Jurassic World Sequel Stories
Jurassic World Sequel Idea #1
When it comes to the next Jurassic movie, there are a couple different directions they can go with it. The most likely ideas were revealed by Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow (who won't be returning for the sequel) while he made the press rounds promoting the movie.
Speaking to Cinemablend, he mentioned this specific line they cut out of the film as a potential launching pad for the next one: "How long do you think you can control it? We won’t always be the only ones who can make a dinosaur."
He then adds, "When we look at various technologies, they go open source at some point, and they proliferate - and I think of a world… a Jurassic World. I changed the title for a reason. It’s not just the name of a theme park, where we coexist with these animals in the way that we do now with other animals in the planet. Don’t go into the jungle! There’s raptors in there! And so there are all kinds of interests who have the ability to make these animals for various needs and purposes. There is potential there."
So perhaps there are other groups -- maybe even military in nature -- who may exploit the technology? Or what about a group that wants to create pets for suburban families? There are all kinds of crazy directions you can go when you open the dinosaur tech up to the masses.
Jurassic World Sequel Idea #2
Or maybe the roots of a sequel were already planted within the film's viral marketing? One chunk of info, via the fictional website for the Jurassic World corporate website (via Slashfilm), mentions another InGen expedition to Siberia:
"The new InGen facility 'Martel' based in Siberia has now opened. A rotating research team of nine scientists and an excavation crew of 45 persons will undergo 18 months of drilling at 42 glacial-ice locations. The team hopes to find organic remains dating from 40,000 to 200,000 years ago."
Mentioned within the info regarding the expedition are wooly mammoths, which opens up the possibility of bringing in species from the Cenozoic Era, including animals like the saber-toothed tiger, giant deer, cave lions and more. Could the next one take place in Siberia? Will Chris Pratt's character be sent in to save the day?
Right now any Jurassic World sequel will probably pull from one of the above, though anything is possible, really. Where would you like to see a sequel go next?
