If true, this could be of the coolest and geekiest collaborations in recent cinema history. Vulture reports that J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg are secretly working on a mysterious film project that was written by Abrams and is being described as "a tip of the hat to [Spielberg's] movies of the 70's and early 80's." That, of course, means we're looking at a film that will be in the vein of E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Jaws in that it will follow everyday people who are tested when thrown right smack into the middle of an extraordinary situation.
Sounds like something Abrams would put together; after all, he is one of the brains behind the TV show Lost, and that's all about ordinary people forced to come together to deal with an extraordinary (and other-worldly) situation. Naturally – because almost everything this man does is kept secret – we don't know much more than that, except Abrams wants to direct it himself and go into production this fall on the fairly low-budgeted (think Cloverfield without the shaky cam) flick. As of now the studios (Paramount and DreamWorks) are denying this exists, but that's their job. I hope it does exist, because if anyone can re-capture the spirit of those old Spielberg films, it's Abrams.
