The Farrelly brothers' box office track record hasn't been the greatest. Though they peaked with early hits like Dumb & Dumber, There's Something About Mary and Me, Myself & Irene, the brothers' films have been a gradual decline in mediocrity. Their most recent films include The Three Stooges and Hall Pass. Stooges barely managed to break even on a $30 million budget while Hall Pass was a minor hit thanks to the international box office.
When word that Jim Carrey was reprising his role as the dimwitted Lloyd Christmas in a Dumb & Dumber sequel, naturally there was some curiosity to see what he and co-star Jeff Daniels would go through this second time around.
Allegedly, the plot was to follow Lloyd and Harry twenty years after we last saw them, but that was all that was revealed.
Carrey was reportedly frustrated that no one at New Line or Warner Brothers was particularly enthusiastic about the sequel. Through his publicist, Carrey said, "I would have thought Dumb and Dumber Two was a no-brainer, after all, it's implied in the title."
The big question now is if the studio will cave in and cater to Carrey's fanbase or if all parties involved will move on to other projects. Carrey, Daniels and the Farrellys have nothing lined up outside of this proposed Dumb & Dumber sequel.
Are you sad to see Carrey drop out of the sequel or were you never interested to begin with?
