During a media day supporting the upcoming three-disc Avatar Special Edition DVD/Blu-ray set, James Cameron went on the record about where he's at in the development process for the next Avatar movie, as well as addressed reports that he's interested in directing a Cleopatra movie with Angelina Jolie.

'Avatar'

Firstly, Cameron confirmed what we had speculated: That he wants to shoot both Avatar 2 and 3 together as one production, then release the films one year apart. Question for him now, though, is whether he will make another film before doing Avatar 2 and 3, both of which do not have deals confirmed yet. And if Cameron does take on a movie before the Avatar sequels, it could be this Cleopatra project.

He told the NY Times, "There's a Cleopatra project in work, meaning that it's been in development at Sony. And it's a subject that's always fascinated me. So yeah, I've been talking to them about it but no decisions have been made. But it sounds hot, doesn't it? I mean, Angelina Jolie and Cleopatra? To me, that's like a slam dunk. Whether I wind up doing it or not, I think it's going to be a great project."

Also, Cameron admitted that Sigourney Weaver's character in Avatar may still be alive. "Nobody dies in a science fiction movie. Whether Grace lives or dies depends more on Sigourney's agent than anything." Look for a more concrete announcement in the coming months since 20th Century Fox needs to make a decision on the next two Avatar movies soon or else it'll be a really long time before they ever see the light of day.

Which would you rather see from Cameron: Avatar 2 or Cleopatra?
