Short answer…yes. While fans of Avatar will be able to enjoy a prequel of sorts to Avatar (potentially by the end of this year), said prequel will not be arriving in movie theaters, but instead on bookshelves. According to MTV, James Cameron will be writing a prequel companion novel to Avatar that will fill in some of the gaps that were missing in the film.
Avatar producer Jon Landau told MTV that the book will expand upon certain storylines that were touched on in the film, but not fleshed out enough. Readers should expect to learn more about Jake's life back on earth before he was recruited to work on Pandora, as well as Dr. Augistine's school for the Na'vi and more. Cameron's goal here (it seems) is to try to stretch the Avatar universe across different forms of entertainment and open it up to the level of fandom that a property like Star Trek or Star Wars currently enjoys.
Creating an Avatar prequel novel will certainly get the ball rolling for Cameron's universe, but it'll be interesting to see if the fans take interest in a novel or if they were only interested in Avatar because it looked really cool in 3D.
