Gina Rodriguez stars in the action-thriller Miss Bala as a young American woman who is visiting a longtime friend in Mexico. Very quickly, however, she and her friend are caught up in violence that could soon prove fatal to them both.

Ismael Cruz Cordova (Mary Queen of Scots) and Anthony Mackie (Avengers: Infinity War) also star.

What's the story?

Per the official synopsis: "Gloria (Gina Rodriguez) finds a power she never knew she had when she is drawn into a dangerous world of cross-border crime. Surviving will require all of her cunning, inventiveness, and strength."

About that title …

In Spanish, "bala" means "bullet." The film's trailer explains why that word is so fraught with peril.

Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. This is his first feature film credit; he has also written and directed a number of short films.

Who directed?

Catherine Hardwicke, the accomplished director of Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown and Twilight. More recently, she has helmed a variety of episodic television shows, including This Is Us and Eyewitness.

When can we see it?

Sony Pictures will release Miss Bala in theaters everywhere on February 1, 2019.
