Tick, tick, tick! The clock is ticking until the next entry in the Hunger Games series -- The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 -- hits theaters, but there is a constructive way to pass the time until that happens: Why not review the strategies of survival offered in horror movies?

Admittedly, most survival horror movies have much more bloodshed and explicit violence than anything that Jennifer Lawrence has been forced to endure, but note the strategies employed by the survivors of disasters both natural and man-made in the following list of recent titles. (Bonus: no need to be an ace at archery to survive!) 

The Purge: Anarchy (2014)

Frank Grillo intends to take advantage of the annual government holiday that allows all crimes to be committed, but he can't resist helping a small group of haggard, desperate people who won't live without his help. Strategy for survival: team up and look pathetic.

Aftershock (2012)

Eli Roth and his nightclubbing friends are happy to survive a massive earthquake, but every time a survivor reaches out to help someone, nasty torture and gruesome death is sure to follow. Strategy for survival: every man (and woman) for themselves!

The Thing (2011)

The remake showed that women like Mary Elizabeth Winstead can be every bit as tough and ruthless as any stinking, shape-shifting man. Strategy for survival: always keep a flamethrower handy.

The Divide (2011)

Surviving a nuclear attack on New York City is only the beginning for eight people struggling to stay alive in the basement of an apartment building. Strategy for survival: save time and kill all your fellow survivors first.

Frozen (2010)

Not to be mistaken with Disney's delightful animated adventure, this movie comes from the wonderfully devious mind and heart of Adam Green (Hatchet), who strands three skiers on a chairlift in the dead of winter and wonders if anyone will survive the freezing cold, not to mention the hungry wolves below. Strategy for survival: bring plenty of warm clothing, plus food -- preferably bloody meat -- for the wolves.
