Horror-movie spin-offs are relatively rare. Freddy vs. Jason was a unique spin-off of two different franchises, matching serial killers Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees against one other in a very bloody, action-packed movie. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones left behind comfortable Caucasian families in the suburbs to see how young Latinos in a low-budget apartment complex fared against the supernatural.
More recently, Annabelle followed the terrifying adventures of a vintage doll that first appeared on screen in The Conjuring. The movie, with a reported budget of just $6.5 million, did extremely well at the box office, earning more than $256 million worldwide. A sequel is on its way creating The Conjuring universe, scheduled to haunt theaters on May 19, 2017.
The original spawned its own sequel, The Conjuring 2, which opened last weekend and has already earned more than $101 million worldwide. Now comes word that yet another spin-off from the series is in the works.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Nun will center on the villain from The Conjuring 2, a demonic spirit. David Leslie Johnson, who cowrote the sequel, has been hired to write the screenplay for the spin-off. James Wan and Peter Safran will produce.
Of note, the nun replaced another villainous character that was already in the movie. Production had been completed and director James Wan had prepared a version that was approved by the studio, New Line. Then Wan had a sudden revelation, came up with the new character, and the studio approved reshoots.
With Annabelle 2 arriving in less than a year, we probably shouldn't expect The Nun until late next year or sometime early in 2018. The Conjuring 2 is now playing in theaters nationwide.
