The Shining

The new indie horror movie Dark House, out in limited theatrical release on Friday, sends a young man with unusual abilities in search of a mysterious property that he's inherited. Eventually, he incurs the wrath of an axe-wielding mob. Watch the trailer below.

Naturally, that axe attack made us think of other great uses of axes in horror movies. Here are five of our favorites.

5. The Raven

Let's start off with a fun clip from Roger Corman's adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe, featuring Vincent Price, Peter Lorre and a big bald man with an axe.

4. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Young Abe Lincoln goes from chopping wood to chopping heads off with his trusty axe in this revisionist horror comedy.

3. Silent Night, Deadly Night

The 1984 original inspired multiple sequels and a remake, but can't be beat for its subversive transformation of a beloved character into an axe-wielding killer.

2. Friday the 13th Part III

Jason Voorhees loves his machete, but he likes his axe, too, taking so much bloody enjoyment in using it on hapless teens that we can't show the results. So this photo of Jason with an axe with have to stand in for all the times he used it throughout the series.

Friday the 13th Part III

1. The Shining

Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) has lost it. He grabs an axe and goes in search of his terrified wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall), who has locked herself in the bathroom. Jack wants in.
