The last big-screen, special effects-heavy Godzilla movie failed to truly win over the fans back in 1998, but that was under Sony's guidance. Now, though, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures (who, among many others, were the ones who brought us 300 and The Dark Knight) are teaming up on a new Godzilla movie that's apparently set to hit theaters in 2012.
Variety brought word on the deal today, and unfortunately there wasn't much else to report. There's no director or cast set up yet, and the story is being kept under wraps for now. There's also no word on whether it will be shot in 3D or converted into 3D after the fact – but seeing as Warner Bros. has already said that all their big tentpole films will be in 3D, at the very least we can confirm that Godzilla will most definitely arrive with that third dimension tacked on.
But what could they do to make this Godzilla succeed where the other one failed? The 1998 Godzilla certainly brought all the usual big-budget, blockbuster scenarios: monster invades New York City, one guy saves the day. What more can they do now? Well, for starters, they can make it less jokey. The last Godzilla was full of stupid jokes that didn't belong there, not to mention a hero (Matthew Broderick) who felt out of place and kinda boring.
Knowing Warners and Legendary are behind it means it'll probably be a pretty intense version of Godzilla, with big effects and lots of slo-mo, sped-up fight scenes. Will be curious to see who they get to direct (Variety says an announcement is coming soon). Is it possible that Zack Snyder (who helmed 300 and Watchmen for the studio) will get behind the camera on this one? Hey, anything is possible, right?
